Help: How to use this site
Below are the most important issues about using the site, separated into sections for teachers and employers.
Teachers first:
- Q. How do I apply for a job if the email address and other details are not shown?
A. Very simple. If you haven't previously registered and applied for any jobs on this site, click on the link that says 'online application form'. This will open the registration form in the same page. Fill that out, and you're registered! Then you will be automatically redirected to the job ad, where you just need to click the button that says 'Apply now'. The employer will receive notification of your application by email.
If you've already applied for a job here, that means you are already registered so you just need to click on 'log in' and enter your email address and password. Again, you will be automatically redirected to the job you were viewing.
The next important step is to complete your user profile - upload your CV and a photo so that employers will be more interested in contacting you.
- Q. Why do some job ads only have an 'Apply now' button, and some have full contact details and extra information about the vacancy?
A. We don't provide free job advertising, unlike some ESL vacancy sites! The vacancies with full details on display have been paid for by credit card, which means we know who authorised the advert in case of any problems. This means that the chances of our users becoming the victims of an employment scam are far, far lower than on many other websites.
- Q. Why can't I write a cover note to go with my application?
A. We are working on a feature that will allow teachers to send a personal message with their application. At the moment, the service is intended to facilitate the initial exchange of contact details in a safe and controlled manner.
- Q. Why can't I change the introductory statement I wrote about myself when I registered?
A. Only you and the site administrators will ever see this statement. We use it simply to get an idea of who is using the site and for what reasons.
- Q. What information can employers see about me?
A. Very little, unless you have applied for one of their vacancies. Employers can search through the teacher database to find potential employees that match their requirements in terms of languages taught, qualifications, experience, etc. but they cannot see your full CV and contact details unless you apply for one of their jobs.
This is intended to protect your privacy - the same system applies whether the employer has paid for his job advert or not. The employer can still see your experience and qualifications (and your picture!).
- Q. If an employer hasn't paid for a job advert, does that mean I should be wary of applying?
A. Not at all. The employer may be enjoying our 'trial period' where he can wait to see how many applications come in. Employers are under no obligation to activate their job adverts if they are not satisfied with the quality of applications.
- Q. Can I get email updates about new jobs?
A. Soon. We are working on a saved search feature that will allow you to specify what kind of jobs you are interested in, and have email updates sent to you based on your preferences. At the moment, we're conscientiously contributing to the tidiness of your inbox.
- Q. Where are the forums, teaching advice, resources, etc?
A. There are none and there never will be any. There are plenty of those around already.
- Q. I'm having problems uploading my picture - the site says it's uploaded, but it isn't.
A. This problem has been reported by a number of users, we're working on it. It seems to happen with pictures that are taken by certain digital cameras! The best way round this is to edit the picture in a program such as Microsoft Photo editor. Scale it down to around 300 pixels in the largest direction and save it as a .jpeg or .jpg and everything should be fine.
